Winter 2012

Hello

I know its been a while since my last post. This ski season has been tough to write about the skiing and riding with the weather being so fickle. Last winter we were blessed with 126.7 inches of snow fall and scored the third snowiest winter on record according to our local T.V. weather person in Burlington, Vermont. This winter of 2011 /  2012 the tables have turned and we have only received 22 inches of snow to date which makes us the 16 lowest snowfall amount on record for this date, again reported by our local T.V. weather person in Burlington, Vermont.  But there is hope. On January 24, of the year 2000 there was only 6.3 inches of snow recorded, but we ended up the winter with 79.9 inches of snow. So keep your fingers crossed and hope we see the snow return to our mountains again. Be thankful for snow making or there wouldn't be much skiing and riding at all.



 The new look for Kneebinding 2012 /2013 is now being shown at buyer shows.  It  will have new cool textured styling and color, plus a new DIN scale of 3-12 for all models.  Kneebinding is proud to announce that after four years of being on the market place there has been zero injured knees reported.  Typically ACL injuries (anterior cruciate ligaments )  occur once for every 1900 skier days. Kneebinding reports that their skiers have accumulated 80,000 skier days without a reported knee injury, Very Impressive.  Kneebinding is catching hold in the market place and is currently being sold in 6 countries and reports approximately 300 retail partners. Ski Season in Stowe, VT. is fast approaching. We've been busy selling equipment, tuning skis, cleaning the shop, receiving new inventory, and getting ready for the snow. The shop is now open every day 9-5 pm .

New Products for 2011/12

Knee Binding

Zeal Goggles
I've heard it over and over in Stowe, VT. How hard it can be to ski in flat light. Stowe is located in Lamoille County, ranked as one the cloudiest counties in the United States. Skiing and riding here we find some days that get plenty of sunshine and others that get very little.  I purposely have been on the look out for a superior flat light goggle. I skied the Zeal Goggle at a Trade Show last winter. What impressed me the most is the science that goes into these goggles and not just fluff.  Photochromic lens which allows 13% to 43% of all visible light by changing the tint of the lens with the brightness of the sun. (or lack of sun) Very helpful for "aging eyes" and the variety of light we have on the slopes Polarized lens for UV protection and spherical lens that offer wider field of view.  Made in sunny Boulder, Colorado.




  Stockli Stormrider 95 Skis
One of the new rockered skis for this season. The Stormrider 95 is a versatile big mountain ski for powder and trails. Early rise tips improves lift in the powder and helps prevent the ski from getting burried.  The  2011 Stockli Stormrider LXL, designed for women  gains Gold Medal status at the 2011 Ski Magazine Gear Tests. Scoring second best in stability and edge grip categories. The Stormrider LXL

Skis are in very good condition with no core shots or ski edge issues. There is normal top skin scratches. Our demo skis were used in my shop (Today's Edge) by interested buyers. They were not used in rocky or marginal snow conditions and were not part of a large demo fleet. They have been tuned up but not over tuned. They all have plenty of edge and base material left.

What's New ?

   Welcome to the new Today's Edge Blog written by Doug Adams, the owner of Today's Edge in Stowe, Vermont.  This marks our 25th year in business and we have made many changes to the shop.  You may have  noticed the new Today's Edge signs and newly planted spruce trees and the new carpeting in the shop.  Now we have twenty two pairs of demo skis from Stockli and Scott for our patrons to use.  Remeber its always best to try before you buy. We have plenty of new skis on hand or save money with a gently used demo ski with bindings.
   This fall was especially busy for me with improvements to the building and traveling the United States doing eleven ski tuning clinic's for Wintersteiger. (supplier of ski tuning machines and tools)  It was fun to see other parts of the country and help out ski shops with their ski & snowboard tuning needs.
   The ski season started on schedule. Opening Thanksgiving weekend with mostly man made snow and some natural snow. Cold temperatures throughout the month of December allowed snowmakers to get more trails open and lifts running. We did see sixteen inches of snow at the mountain on December 7th, followed by 5 days of snow showers and flurries that made for the best conditions of the season.
   Christmas week was very busy throughout Stowe with lots of traffic in town and much needed economic boost for business owners.  Our economy seems to be recovering in "this neck of the woods" very nice to see and hope it continues.
    New Years day 2011.  The first day of the month started off with a classic January thaw. Light rain and rising temperatures brought on spring like skiing in the first two days of the month. We lost 6 inches of snow at the snow measuring stake which is located near the top of Mount Mansfield, better known as "the stake" currently reading twenty four inches of snow. Cold temperatures have returned and the snow makers are back rebuilding base and we are on the look out for a good snow storm.  I do believe its going to be a snowy year based on my unscientific theory that I have not shoveled my roof since 2009 and my meager snowplowing bills from last winter makes me feel that we are due for some snow this winter.  Vermont weather is famous for one extreme to another extreme in a week's time there's still lots of winter left.
